Use the existing approved estimating and claims environment wherever it can meet the acceptance standard. A DIY production operation does not require a replacement core claims platform or a proprietary estimating engine.
What is the minimum viable architecture?
Design five connected functions:
- Controlled intake: assignment details, input validation and missing-evidence requests.
- Evidence storage: original documents and images, access controls and a manifest.
- Estimating environment: editable estimate, settings and technical notes.
- Work queue: ownership, status, deadlines, exceptions and revisions.
- Carrier record: accepted output, approval history and auditable hand-off.
Verisk documents a field-inspection integration that can return attachments and images to XactAnalysis/Xactimate, with optional structured line-item contribution. Its example still has the adjuster review the inspection data and complete the estimate. Cotality’s Estimate product page describes estimating, diagramming, carrier rules and field-to-desk functions. These are available workflow capabilities, not independent proof of your eventual file accuracy. (developerportal.verisk.com)
What must the integration test prove?
Use synthetic or authorised redacted cases to test:
- Correct claim, loss and assignment matching.
- Attachment counts and successful opening of every required file.
- Correct handling of units, quantities, notes and totals.
- Preservation of original evidence and prior versions.
- Duplicate-message handling without duplicate estimates or attachments.
- Rejected transfers, retries and failed-transfer alerts.
- Permissions for producers, reviewers, administrators and service accounts.
- Version conflicts when two people work on the same file.
- Export of the complete accepted package without proprietary dashboard access.
- Restoration of access and work queues after an outage.
For a low-volume pilot, a security-approved manual transfer process may be sufficient. Give it a named operator, transfer manifest and reconciliation check. Count the labour rather than describing it as integrated.
Why must software settings be versioned?
A concrete example is Verisk’s expanded labour-efficiency architecture: its documentation says the expanded options use price lists beginning in January 2026 and require Xactimate version 2026.2.1000.1 or later, released on or after 10 March 2026. It also identifies a variation-report limitation involving legacy checkpoint price lists. Record relevant software, price-list and parameter versions so a later reviewer can reproduce the basis of an estimate. (verisk.com)
Where is AI useful without surrendering control?
As proposed pilot tasks, consider document indexing, extraction with source references, draft narratives and missing-field detection. Keep quantities, totals and rule checks in deterministic calculations wherever practicable, and require verification of generated factual statements.
NIST’s generative-AI risk profile identifies confident false output, including fabricated logic and citations, as a risk. A source-looking reference in generated text is therefore not sufficient verification. (nvlpubs.nist.gov)
Adopt these operating controls:
- No invented measurements, observations, invoices or inspection findings.
- Original photographs remain preserved; annotations are separate derivatives.
- Uploaded documents are evidence, not instructions governing the system.
- No model training on claim material without explicit organisational approval and contractual permission.
- Model, prompt, rule and configuration changes receive regression testing.
- The workflow can revert to manual production without losing records.
- AI does not obtain payment, settlement or external-communication authority merely because it can draft text.
NIST’s broader trustworthiness guidance supports in-domain testing, monitoring and the ability to intervene in or stop systems that depart from intended behaviour. The specific controls above are this desk’s proposed application to file production. (airc.nist.gov)
Exit gate: a test package can travel from intake to accepted carrier record, then be exported and reconstructed by someone who did not produce it.
