Does the new IICRC fire-and-smoke standard solve wildfire documentation requirements?

ANSI/IICRC S700’s first edition is dated 2025. IICRC describes it as addressing fire-residue assessment, restoration processes, work plans and documentation, but its published scope excludes wildfires from the general fire-event description and does not comprehensively address certain wildfire and hazardous-event issues. (iicrc.org)

On 26 December 2025, IICRC announced a revision intended to add methods and processes for wildfire-impacted structures. Its current S700 page says the consensus body has begun revision work; that is not evidence that a completed wildfire-inclusive edition has been published. (iicrc.org)

Recommended technical-QA controls:

  • Record the standard and edition actually relied upon.
  • Identify where the loss falls outside its stated scope.
  • Require a claim-specific explanation for material restoration recommendations.
  • Keep proposed standard revisions separate from approved carrier rules.

Treat S700 as a technical-standard development, not a substitute for the applicable insurance law, health-and-safety requirements or policy analysis. No claim of universal regulatory certification should be inferred from a supplier’s reference to the standard.
